The nature of Drenthe

Over the past 4 months we have been promoting the 12 Dutch provinces to the world. And we are glad to say that it has been an experience for us. Slowly leading this blog to a successful future. And with this blog we are coming to the end of our province list.

Last but not least is the province of Drenthe. Often forgotten by tourists, Drenthe is anything but a place worth forgetting. To put it differently, Drenthe is a blend between new and old. With large spaces of nature and farmland still intact, it resembles a piece of the old Dutch landscape. A contrast to this are the circuit races in Assen, which clearly demonstrates that Drenthe also lives in the present.

Drenthe is located in the north-eastern corner of the Netherlands. Below the provinces of Friesland and Groningen and above the province of Overijssel. It also shares its eastern border with Germany.

As said earlier, Assen is host of a racing circuit. And it is one of the main touristic attractions for foreign tourists, whom all want to see the TT of Assen and the world championship superbike. Besides the major races, smaller races are held around the world. If you are interested in this, make sure to check the site and visit a race during your stay. It also possible to drive on the track yourself. For more information about this, sign up and visit this website.

One of the major attractions in Drenthe are its 'hunebedden' or dolmen. These rocky tombs are scattered throughout the province. A total of 54 still exist in Drenthe and visiting one during your stay is a must. This can be done by yourself. Or with some help from the 'hunebedden' museum in Borger.

The forest north of Borger is home to a rather unique experience. At outdoor center Boomkroonpad it is possible to experience the forest from a different perspective, from above. The walkways between the trees make it possible to see the forest as if you were a squirrel. The forest also offers fun activities for young children. Like building your own forest hut. Of course it is preferable to take this tour after a couple of days of good weather. The route and information can be found here. Unfortunately the site is only in Dutch, but the people at the location should be able to give you the information you need.

The Veenpark shows the history of the bog lands of Drenthe. Once an important resource for making fire. Today this park shows how life was back in the days of the bog gathering. The park covers a total of 160 acres and all is accessible on foot. It is preferable to visit the park on a sunny/dry day, but there is plenty to do in the buildings if there happens to be a rain shower. More information can be found on their website, which is available in German and in Dutch.

Quite near the Veenpark is Emmen. Home to one of the larger zoo's in Holland. Dierenpark Emmen offers a wide selection of exotic animals. There is definitely something for everyone in this park, which makes it very suited for all ages. More information can be found on their website. Which unfortunately is only available in Dutch. Any questions can be asked by contacting them.

Drenthe is also home to a museum dedicated to a Dutch icon, the clogs. In the international clogs museum shows the process of making clogs and also displays a large collection of clogs from the Netherlands and other European countries.

Delicacies

- Boerenwafels (Rusk coated with a mix of eggs and milk, that is baked)
- Kniepertje (A hard thin waffle, often only obtainable around new years eve)
- Sneiballegie (Gin with a bit of sugar)
- Sausages (Sausages from the area of Drenthe)

Flevoland, a province you have to see!

Flevoland is the youngest province in Holland and is located in the centre of Holland, at the location of the former Zuiderzee in 1986. Although this province is relatively young, there is plenty to do in Flevoland!

Every year, from the 14th of April till the 6th of May, the ‘Bolletjestocht’ is held in Flevoland. This is signposted route from more than 80 kilometers long and takes you among more than 1000 hectares of tulips. This route is marked by National Geographic in 2009 as one of the world’s finest driving routes and is definitely worth a visit if you are in Holland in this period.

Another thing you should do while you are in Flevoland is visiting Bataviastad. This outlet centre is open 365 days in a year and has more than a 100 shops where you can find products with 30-70% discount!  During your shopping session you can also take a break by relaxing in one of the nice restaurants. At the website of Bataviastad you can find more information (in English).

If you like more action, you can also visit attraction park Walibi. This attraction park is open from the 7th of April and has a lot of roller coasters. Furthermore, Walibi also organizes some events during the year. For example, you can dance the night away during the Summer Nights on the 25th of July and the 1st, 8th and 15th of August.

At the 5th of may, everywhere in Holland there are festivals to celebrate our freedom, including in Lelystad, the capital of Flevoland. Enjoy this festivals for free and enjoy Holland’s best performers! On the website http://www.bevrijdingsfestivals.nl/ you can find an overview of all festivals.

We couldn’t find any specific local delicacies of Flevoland, but don’t worry! You can always try some Dutch delicacies everywhere in Holland like:

-       Drop

-       Dutch pancakes

-       Stroopwafels (cookies filled with syrup)

Overijssel, a province to visit

With only three provinces left, Overijssel cannot be forgotten. This province in the east of Holland can be a perfect getaway for the people who are looking for a nice, calm day, but also for the people who love a little bit more action.

If you are looking for a more quiet getaway, there are many recreation parks in Overijssel where you can spend your day, by taking a walk in one of the forests and enjoying the beautiful nature. Moreover, there are also a lot of camping’s in Overijssel where you can stay during your trip. In this way, you can enjoy Overijssel a couple of days. On the site of Eurocamp, you can find all Dutch campings in Holland. This English site also shows you a map on which you can find the camping you need. This map will give a nice overview of the location of the camping and the contact information.

Another thing you can do in Overijssel, but also in some other provinces, is the typical Dutch game ‘boerengolf’. You can play this game, translated as farmers golf in English, at some local Farms with a large group of people. With ‘boerengolf’, you play golf, but with a stick with a wooden shoe at the end and a little soccer ball. Also, the route of this game will lead you straight through the meadows and along cows. You will have a great time playing this hilarious game and you can also have some diner afterwards. You will find some campings or farms that offer this game in the next link and you can make an appointment by contacting them:

When you are with your family, you can also visit amusement park Slagharen. Here they offer you more than 40 attractions and a holiday park, so you can enjoy Slagharen more than one day.

If you don’t have much time, you can also visit Enschede, a city in Overijssel Here you can enjoy the culture and the history of the city. On the 22th of April, you can also take a look at the marathon of Enschede . This is the oldest marathon in Holland en was first held in 1947.

Because it is almost Easter, you can also visit some other locations. For example you can visit Holten, where they are trying to makes the biggest Paasvuur (Easter Fire) of the world. The current world record is 27,87 meter!

To finish this blog, some delicacies of Overijssel!
